Many artists believe that the ultimate basis of good painting is good composition. The arrangement of the elements in an image is fundamental to a creating a strong, successful artwork.
In this two day workshop, students will get a crash course on theories and principles of composition and have an opportunity to create an artwork based on those principles. On the first day, instructor Michael Pianta will lecture on the theory of composition, drawing on the wisdom of artists throughout art history, and then he will guide students in designing their own still-life compositions based on the lecture. On the second day, students will paint their still lifes in an alla-prima or wet-into-wet fashion. At the end of the workshop, students will go home with a painting that they truly can say is their own composition.
