I Wanna Be A Cowboy by Marshall Harris

January 4 – February 20, 2019

RECEPTION: Friday, January 4, 2019

Fort Works Art, in conjunction with the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, presents I Wanna Be A Cowboy, an exhibition showcasing original graphite on mylar drawings and limited edition prints by Fort Worth artist Marshall Harris.

Coinciding with the annual Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo this exhibition includes several of Harris’ original Saddle drawings, as well as his renowned ‘The Hand That Feeds’ drawing, on loan from collectors. This will be the first time these incredible original works will be on view to the public in Fort Worth. Keeping in the western theme, Harris will also have new additions to his colorful Psychedelic Saddle series that are available in various sizes.

Marshall Harris creates extremely complex and larger than life drawings executed with graphite on mylar. Each piece is labor intensive, comprising 300 - 400 hours spent rendering every small and seemingly insignificant characteristic of his subject, be it a scar on human skin or the creases found on a well-loved leather saddle. With his extraordinary and obsessive attention to detail, Harris invites you as the viewer to see the history of commonplace objects and the impact they have on our lives.

Born in Texas, Harris received his B.F.A from TCU in 1979 and his M.F.A in sculpture from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA in 2010. Following a career in the National Football League from 1980-86, Harris turned his attentions towards creative vocations including Museum Curator, Graphic Designer and Exhibit Designer for zoos snd aquaria and finally fine artist in 2006. His work has been exhibited nationally and is held in corporate and private collections. Harris was the recipient of the prestigious Hunting Art Prize in 2013.

As of September 2018, Harris was selected as the first Artist In Residence in a new program at Fort Works Art Gallery. Through their non-profit Gallery of Dreams, Harris will have the opportunity to create a new body of work in a provided studio space for a one year term that will conclude with a solo exhibition. While allowing the artist to focus on creating work in a welcoming and inspiring environment, the residency program gives the opportunity for students and the community to observe and engage with a working artist. The program will also include artist lectures and various educational opportunities.
