Five V by Hiroko Tanaka

November 2 - November 25, 2018

Reception: November 2, 2018; 6 - 9pm

The theme of my paintings is “Spirals and women”. Yokohama, where I grew up and where I live today is a special place that inspires my works and my life itself. Ever since Japan opened the country in 1868 after two centuries isolationism, Yokohama has been our nation’s gateway to the world. The ocean and waves of Yokohama port represent spirals of time flowing from the past to the future, and bring various energies to my art. Young women walking lively around the “Minato-mirai (futuristic port)” town combines Yokohama’s wave like music, singing and dancing, filled with brightness and happiness. The composition of flat waves and colorful costumes of the women are my own contemporary interpretation of the Edo-period “Ukiyo-e” woodblock prints.

When I was a teenager, I was chosen to be a model for the Girl Scouts Friendship statue in Yokohama by coincidence. Half a century later, I had a reunion with the other statue models, Libby and Audrea, and I visited Fort Worth, Texas twice. I created this new series of paintings titled “Five V” as an expression of how I was moved by the bond of friendship. Five main women are represented throughout the paintings, each with her own color and key word. Their characters and colors, their passage through the past, the present, and the future creates a tapestry of the humor, closeness, and elegance that is their friendship with one another.
