Description
Introduction to Bookmaking: Simply Folded to The Codex is an introduction to the application of concepts and techniques for bookmaking. The workshop places an emphasis on developing ideas, materials, and basic bookbinding techniques to create artist’s books.
Patrons who wish to participate may be at the novice or advanced artistic level. Methods of presentation for the workshop content will occur through lecture and demonstrations with one-on-one interaction with the instructor. There will be an opportunity to view and handle physical copies of handmade books to study the bindings and experience the tactile qualities of the materials used in book arts.
The workshop will demonstrate three bookbindings: Simply Folded: Snake Book, Simply Sewn: Single Signature / Pamphlet Stitch, and The Codex: Retchoso. Participants will learn about measuring, cutting, folding, and tearing paper, dissecting holes, folded and sewn bindings, and the creation of soft-covers. Participants will create a book for each of the above-mentioned bindings during the workshop for hands-on interaction and learning.
